reports of our walks
a light-hearted pilgrimage from Stratford Abbey to Waltham Abbey spring 2014
The start : the foundations of the gatehouse of Stratford Langthorne Abbey. The site of the abbey itself is under the railway tracks and the Jubilee Line depot. The photo was taken in Abbey Gardens, worth a visit in themselves.
The theme : to walk in easy stages from the site of Stratford Langthorne Abbey to Waltham Abbey along the eastern edge of the Lea Valley, passing the site of medieval manor houses.
The hidden history : the junction of Abbey Road with West Ham Lane is a typical Essex village centre, a parish church (All Saints) with a village green and a number of pubs (all but one closed in this case)
